The plan is in the (near) future to have F-35's accompanied by several 'loyal wingman' drones, which are controlled by the F-35 pilot and will take on the more dangerous tasks of penetrating heavily defended airspace, taking out air defense systems while the F-35 pilot acts like an airborne command post and loiters, somewhat safely, behind. An interesting concept.
So my question is, has the drone to be used been selected yet or is it still too early in the program and various concepts are still be experimented with? I know F-16's have been used as loyal wingman drones, but i'm not sure that these would ever be used in an actual combat situation and are more just for testing the idea.
