SM8005 TBD-1 Devastator, VT-6 USS Enterprise, March 1941.
I have to admit I wasn't juiced to own this model. We all know the criticism for this TBD, as well as for the recent SM8006-- plain gray is boring, and worse yet, the Devastator didn't fight in 1941.
Two things changed my mind-- the SkyMax TBD mold is one of the finest diecast ever, and also, a $20 delivered price couldn't be ignored.
The paint color is fairly light, maybe too light. With a single overall color and sparse markings, the model is modest. She's stuck in a strange place-- not colorful prewar, and not the tough fighting plane she was in the first half of '42.
This gentle model photographed very well, she's very easy to light and has a flawless finish. I'm glad she's mine.
Some basic information culled from Lynn Ritger's research. Will look through my references for more info. One of the rare Devastators that was not lost in combat or due to an accident.
0325 Delivered to VT-6, 6-T-4. True Blue tail for USS Enterprise. White section leader/black trim. Aircraft crashed on 7/31/39 while with VT-6; Recovered, believed repaired. D. E. Runyon, AMM2 (NAP) Pilot rescued.
Full colors until December 1940. Sometime in mid-1941 was painted Blue Gray over Light Gray with full white codes, single LSO stripe, small fuselage star. Listed with Commander Air Fleet Pacific on 6/4/42 (The date of Midway battle).
I agree with you regarding the quality of the tooling. I have two Devastotors, this and the yellow and black pre-war issue. It has been said before and it is worth saying again about the quality of Skymax's limited output. I have the pale grey Corgi Predators version of the Dauntless and they make a fine pair.
My name is Sergei and I am a diecast collector. It's been three days now since I last bought a model.
Absolutely - it's on its way. Whether it shall be displayed is another matter. Picture attached - some recent purchases - only the P-39 is displayed. A favourite! TBD in the picture is SM8004 - Enterprise Spring 1942. Also a little dull but a wonderful model. Heavy!
That is a nice one. Sort of a vintage version of low vis.
Paint blue over that with the small fuselage insignia where it is would be something not done by Skymax yet, and with a torpedo too.
You've got one on the way! Congrats!
Yeah, had to have at least one of the grey ones, and would rather have an Pacific Enterprise TBD.
Surprisingly the VT-6 is hard to find now, so buy now or never (a little more than what you paid but still a good deal at $53 free shipping)
I don't feel bad about a plane that didn't see action till it got some blue on it. There's plenty of fast pointy things out there to buy with non spectacular grey paint jobs that people go gaga over that never saw anything close to the action the lumbering TBD did.
This is actually the Devastator I want the most, primarily because it was on board the U.S.S. Enterprise in the Pacific during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and because of the significance of the carrier's absence. I also like that this particular plane was the last Devastator in U.S. Navy service. There are still a few on European sites for sale. I suspect I'll snag one. I quite like its subtle light grey finish.
