Gemini Aces GARNS4001 McDonnell Douglas FG.1 (F-4K) Phantom II Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm (FAA) 892 NAS, XT872, HMS Ark Royal, 1977 "Silver Jubilee" Markings 1/72 Scale
Limited Production 1250 Pieces Year of Release 2008
A very nice model by Gemini Aces released back in 2008. A distinctive feature of the RN's Phantoms was the extendable nose gear oleo to allow launches at a higher angle of attack from the smaller British Carriers. Gemini has provided both an extended and normal nose gear to allow both options for display. I have chosen the extended version to display this unique feature.
I remember reading about the Royal Navy's last conventional Aircraft Carrier HMS "Ark Royal" and her Phantom and Buccaneer detachments in the late 1970s. I can't help but wonder if Ark Royal had remained in service as a deterrent, if the Falkland's War of 1982 would have even happened.
Anyways, once again a great model. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in British or Naval subjects.
The following two photos below show the use of the extended nose wheel oleo on RN Phantoms to increase the angle of attack during launch off of smaller British Aircraft Carriers.
When the UK received the Phantom FG 1`s Ark Royal was not ready from refit. The trials were, therefore, made aboard a US carrier - I think the USS Saratoga The exta extendable nose leg combined with more powerful engines in afterburner caused damage to the deck of the carrier. This lead to mods to Ark Royal to add more cooling to the blast deflectors and deck.
I have two of these. Overall I prefer them to HM "Tombs". However, the fin mounted probes are rather delicate and this release needs both ejection seats raised and the headboxes re-painted. I'd like to see an 892 pre-Jubilee release, and some more crab releases. But it's been quiet for rather a long time now.

Like other lads,....have a couple of Gemini's best, including a beaut code 3 limited release, 111 SQN. I have always loved the Omega sign on RN Spooks. Luv it so much I bought the 1:48 version.
Good Lord,...where has the time gone???
"In my opinion the plan was not serious, especially the NAVY didnt want to have the responsibility. And the NAVY has asked the Air Force to, first of all to establish, the absolute air superiority over the invasion area. And the preparation the NAVY did were not very convincing."
